2 - Armentieres Square and Lock 6w

Construction of a new canal along the old canal line with new locks and bridges. Work started in late September 1999 and was completed in March 2001.

The entrance to Delta Crompton cable site from Trinity Street before works started on restoring the canal. The original lock 6w was situated here.

The same location after the buildings and silos on the Delta site have been demolished. This shows construction of the reinforced concrete canal channel on the site of the old lock 6w just upstream of Trinity Street.

By late autumn 1999 Armentieres Square the car park had been removed and the buses re-routed along Trinity Street. In this picture excavation was complete for the new lock 6w and service diversions had been made. Note the same line of buildings as those shown in the picture above.

This shows construction of the new lock 6w in March 2000. The view is taken from the base of excavation at the tail of the lock with the Holy Trinity church behind.

Engineers inspect the new reinforced concrete lock 6w in Armentieres Square. The pipes on the right will connect to the sluices to permit the water level to be changed within the lock.

22 tonne precast concrete units are swung into place to form the new service bridge for Armentieres Square in January 2000.

The Armentieres Square service road has had to be repaved. Here a surfacing gang place and form an imprint in proprietary modified bitumen thin-layer surfacing.

With Armentieres Square reopened to traffic, Trinity Street has been permanently closed. Here the section of concrete channel across the site of Trinity St is being built to link the new Lock 6w with the completed Delta section.
